A cover-up done right doesn’t look like a cover-up — it looks like the tattoo you should have had in the first place.
But not every old tattoo can hide under every new idea, and anyone who tells you otherwise is setting you up for disappointment. I work cover-ups in opaque black & grey — solid, dense tones built for maximum coverage — and every one starts with an honest assessment of what your old tattoo actually allows.

Why cover-ups can’t be “anything you want”
Tattoo ink doesn’t erase — it layers. A cover-up works by placing darker values over the old piece and building a new design whose structure absorbs the old one.
Dark covers dark, not light. The new design needs enough deep tone exactly where the old piece is darkest.
Bigger is almost always better. A cover-up usually needs to be meaningfully larger than the original, so the old shape disappears into the new composition instead of dictating it.
Sometimes laser helps. One or two fading sessions before the cover-up can open up dramatically better design options. It’s not required for most cover-ups — and I’ll tell you honestly if yours would benefit.
How I design a cover-up
Every cover-up is its own puzzle, and no two solutions look alike. I map the old piece’s darkest zones, then build a composition that puts its own shadows exactly there — a design made for your old tattoo, never a template.
Cover-ups are priced like any other project: by session (half-day $900, full-day $1,700), with size and session count depending on what we’re covering. The consultation is free, and it’s the only honest way to answer “can this be covered?”
